Pre-Reader Books
The Jingle Book by Carolyn Wells The Jingle Book
When I find a book that makes me laugh out loud, I can't wait to share it. And even more so, when it is a book that little people will delight in as well as their parents.
Sammie and Susie Littletail by Howard Roger Garis Sammie & Susie Littletail
Almost everyone has heard of the board game, "Uncle Wiggily" but few people are acquainted with the charming book that began his adventures.
Raggedy Ann & Andy Stories by Johnnie Gruelle Raggedy Ann & Andy Stories
When looking for old treasures, I like to balance those that are definitely "girl" books with an equal number of those that can be seen as "boy" books, and of course, as many as I can find that will appeal to both.
The Tale of Grunty Pig by Arthur Scott Bailey Slumber-Town Tales Vol. 1
Stories about  Grunty pig, Henrietta Hen, Miss Kitty Cat, and Old Dog Spot -- what fun these tiny tales are!

Youth Books

Seven Little Austrlains by Ethel Turner
Seven Little Australians
G'day Mate! Don't you just love mischievous little ankle biters? No, not galoots, but high-spirited, energetic, real tykes who can cause a kafuffle and entertain you with their antics?
Just David by Eleanor Hodgman Porter
Just David
If you're going to fall in love with just one book, this one may be it. Completely encouraging, thoroughly positive, definitely inspiring, and filled with music that will capture your heart and soul, this is one of my special favorites.
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew by Margaret Sidney
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew
So many people, upon hearing that we were doing this book, have said, "Oh! I grew up on the Five Little Peppers!"  Having read it years ago, I count myself among their number.
A Little Princess by Frances Hodgson Burnett
A Little Princess
Kids and adults alike will be inspired by Sara's use of imagination to reshape the world around her. Holding her head high, treating everyone with kindness and dignity,  never whining at the difficulties of life, and acting like a princess

Teen Books

Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster
Daddy-Long-Legs
This book is another "gem" from my youth and we truly hope that teens today will find it just as charming as we have. Some know it as an old movie (1955 and starring Fred Astaire) but the book is infinitely better!
Beyond Rope and Fence by David Grew
Beyond Rope and Fence
While most people will not have heard of this book or this author, it is perfect for the horse lovers among us. Hearing stories about Queen, a foal when we first meet and a seasoned leader of a herd by book's end, brings images of the wide open Alberta prairie to the mind's eye.
A Little Bush Maid by Mary Grant Bruce
A Little Bush Maid
Avago at this delightful book from Down Under that is a beaut! It sure gives a fair dinkum taste of life in the Out Back before the turn of the century.  A good read for girls, they will love eleven year-old Norah, who has no mum but who lives with her father and older brother, Jim.
Nobody's Boy by Hector Malot
Nobody's Boy
If you're looking for a heartwarming tale, then this is it! With so many interesting  elements, from abandoned babies to performing dogs to mine disasters, this book keeps you wondering if the story can possibly get any more complicated.

Grown-Up Books

Lad: A Dog by Albert Payson Terhune
Lad: A Dog
This is one book I cannot read without a full box of tissues nearby. Don't even think of starting it without at least a handkerchief. Thankfully the tears result in a smile at the happy endings of each chapter and I guarantee that you will fall in love with this brave-hearted canine.
The Haunted Bookshop by Christopher Morley
The Haunted Bookshop
Love mysteries? Enjoy suspense? Frequent book stores? Then this is the perfect story for you! It has everything that an avid mystery aficionado would crave: stolen books, break ins, kidnap plots, a mysterious suitcase, stealthy characters and bombs.
The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rinehart
The Circular Staircase
What fun! Every now and then I just have to recommend a book that is solely for enjoyment. No big moral here, no lessons to be learned, no philosophies to adopt. Instead, the charming but eccentric characters, the plot twists...
Greyfriar's Bobby by Eleanor Atkinson
Greyfriar's Bobby
Written by Eleanor Atkinson, American author, journalist, and teacher in 1912, Greyfriar's Bobby tells the fictionalized story of a little Skye Terrier who diligently guarded the grave of his master for fourteen years after his death.

Nostalgic Books

Hospital Sketches by Louisa May Alcott
Hospital Sketches
Don't you just love it when an author tells a story in such a way that you feel like she is a dear friend? Miss Alcott displays that very elusive talent in this book. You can almost 'see' the army camp, the wounded soldiers, and the pained faces that tell what is often their last words to this young, volunteer army nurse.
Sergeant York and His People by Samuel Kincaid Cowan
Sergeant York and His People
What a story this is! Sergent York was an underprivileged and undereducated conscript during WW I, who showed remarkable responsibility, courage, and sharp-shooting skill during his army career.
Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington
Up From Slavery
This book is pure inspiration! I'm always delighted to suggest a book that will lift you up and encourage your socks off. If you are wondering why life is hard or you're discouraged with the world, meeting Dr. Washington and listening to his story will warm your heart down to your tootsies.

“Creative ideas flourish best in a shop which preserves some spirit of fun.
Nobody is in business for fun, but that does not mean
there cannot be fun in business.”

~Leo Burnett ( 1891-1971 )
